Kinja'd!!!

The German state of Northrhine-Westphalia announced that they are dissatisfied with their BMW 318d police cars that they acquired for a couple of million Euros to replace their old Passats. The list of the complaints:

-lack of height adjuster for the seat belt

-the intermittent wipers are either too fast or too slow

-the time for the‘coming home’ function of the headlights is too short

-the radio doesn’t work sometimes

-the window tint and tail lights are too dark

-lack of trunk space

Weird, the BMWs work just fine here in Bavaria. One thing I actually want to know is if they actually test the cars before they order them. They could have just gone with the VW Touran or Opel Zafira Tourer or even Ford Mondeo.

I love it how the German word for Radio is Funk

These Funk buttons are rare and stupidly expensive

It’s for the secret Bootsy Collins function that only a handful of Mk4s had.

I thought this was satire at first, but apparently they’re serious complaints.

Boot space is an issue and forces them to make compromises with the equipment they have in the car and use the rear seats for that as well. If there’s a ride along, another car has to be called in cas of an arrest. The radio is mounted in the passenger footwell and prone to fail because the passanger’s feet tend to hit it. Lights turning off quickly can be dangerous when on duty at night, etc

Dunno what to say about the wiper speeds, they have to be taking the piss on this one

source btw, in german

They had more issues with the Opel Insignia estates. The belt line of the car was to high to see properly out of, the seats were too high in the sides which caused their utility belts and stab/bullet proof vests to raise as they got in the car and sat down, rear visibility was poor, etc...

Kinja'd!!!

This they found out after they ordered hundreds of the damned things. Doh.

The police explicitly ordered sport seats for the Insignia but found out afterwards that they were too small.

But they could have figuered that all out before leasing 1845 of these things. Here in Bavaria the police seems to be quite satisfied with the 3er.

You’d of thought they would of tried them out first with a car shared around the stations for feedback.

The radio issue is the only one of those that couldn’t and shouldn’t have been found in an evaluation period, this is kind of nuts.

It really is stupid. But yes, the radio is very important.

Opel even considered the police when designing and developing the seats for the police, at least that’s what I read a couple of years ago.

That’s a double doh.

The car was pretty much the only option as they are built in that area of Germany (I can’t think of the place without having to Google it).

But still, do a car, try it out, get feedback, not good, try something else, etc...

In Scotland there is one police force, one in Northern Ireland, four in Wales and 39 in England. A car or several will be offered (usually from BMW, Land Rover, Ford or Vauxhall) to a police force to assess and then passed to the next who wish to trial it. Feedback given and then a force will either buy or lease several or say no.
